About Us

The Studio

Melissa Morton Garden Design was established in 2012, practising garden and planting designs initially from a home office.  Our small studio was established in early 2020 providing a much-loved dedicated workspace, in the heart of Ilkley town centre.  This allows our team to collaborate, and deliver elegant gardens that work beautifully.

Melissa is a Pre-registered Member of the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) and is part way through professional accreditation to become a fully Registered Member of the Society.

Registered membership is an endorsement by the SGD of a designer’s work and professionalism.  It indicates that the registered designer possesses extensive practical experience, and the technical and creative skills required by a top designer.  This offers an assurance of quality to potential clients.

We are fully insured for public liability and professional indemnity.  We abide by the Professional Code of Conduct of the SGD.

Melissa Morton Garden Design is a small, hand-picked team dedicated to work creatively on bespoke designs tailored to each client and site.

""I spent 12 years in an academic and technical environment in the sciences. However I often yearned to be outdoors working in my garden.  I love learning too.
I now share my knowledge for each garden and its planting with my clients.  This really helps them engage with, and enjoy their outdoor space so much more"

The Team

Melissa Morton

Melissa began her garden design career, having completed a year studying Landscape Architecture at Leeds Beckett University. Previous to this, Melissa qualified with a Diploma in Horticulture (Royal Horticultural Society, RHS). All this after a 10 year career as a university teaching fellow in colour science and chemistry. This background has given Melissa a unique and varied expertise.

By applying her horticultural knowledge, understanding of colour applications and, above all, the awareness of landscape character and the site context, Melissa draws on a creative process and a technical expertise to deliver elegant gardens that work beautifully.

Melissa loves learning new approaches to sustainable practices and sharing these with her clients.

Rachel Forbes

Rachel & Melissa collaborate on selected projects. Particularly inspired by the wider landscape, Rachel firmly believes that access to green space and a close relationship with nature is fundamental to our wellbeing.

Rachel has qualifications in Landscape Architecture (BA and Postgraduate diploma, Leeds Beckett University) and a Certificate in Horticulture (RHS).

“Ever since I bought my first home, I’ve always enjoyed gardening. Learning how plants grow, what conditions they like and how they work together in planting combinations. Being outdoors, and the physical exercise that comes with gardening, I have always found uplifting and refreshing. When we bought our family home, I loved and nurtured the garden. Although it was a lovely space, the garden just didn’t quite work, so I enrolled on an evening class in Garden Design at RHS Harlow Carr. My mind was opened up to the wonderful journey of garden & landscape design and I've not looked back…”
