I wasn’t sure a 2 hour consultation could be so productive! Sue was about to embark on an extension on her Ilkley home. Having moved in a couple of years ago, she and her husband had an architect prepare drawings and the builders were due to start in a few weeks time.
Her prime concern was a mature clematis which she thought would have to be transplanted when the extension was built. Since moving in she also realised how shady and wet her garden was. She needed advice on planting and maintenance and having found my one-off consultation service via my website she booked a consultation.
It had also become apparent that she was at a loss about how to progress the garden. The back drop of adjacent derelict and uncared for woodland was also a visual obstacle for her.
On a rare sunny day in March, she received advice on pruning (my secateurs are usually with me and always come in handy) and I could show her how to get the best out of her roses and climbing hydrangea. As a designer, I can identify what assets can be drawn upon and enhanced. Instead of battling and trying to completely screen the land behind, I suggested some ideas on how to work with it, and trying some structural planting which worked with the scale of the woodland and neighbour’s trees. We also discussed reshaping the lawn which would give a more positive impact.
