How to Create Privacy in a Small Garden: Expert Garden Design Tips from My RHS Talk

A garden talk at RHS Wentworth about Creating privacy in the garden by Melissa Morton and introduced by Emma Real-Davies.
RHS garden talk: creating privacy in a garden. Main stage host Emma Real-Davies

Last week, I was delighted to speak at RHS Wentworth Woodhouse in Rotherham, representing the Society of Garden & Landscape Designers (SGLD). As a Registered Member of the SGLD, it was a privilege to share design ideas and case studies in a talk titled “To See or Be Seen” — a subject close to the hearts of many homeowners.

With gardens becoming smaller and privacy increasingly scarce, the talk explored how thoughtful design can transform a compact outdoor space into a personal, sheltered retreat.

I discuss practical strategies to create a sense of seclusion without compromising on beauty or function — whether through layered planting, bespoke screening, focal points that draw the eye, or the clever use of colour.

The aim was to inspire attendees with ideas they could take home and use, whatever the size of their garden.

"If you're part of a local garden group or organisation and are looking for a speaker, I’d be happy to deliver this topic which has many design tips for gardens. Tips include privacy solutions, planting design and use of colour. Please get in touch to find out more or if you'd like to book a future talk."
